A new hearing aid can feel unfamiliar at first. You may notice the device behind your ear, the receiver wire along your skin, or the dome sitting in the ear canal. That awareness often becomes less noticeable as you learn the routine.

Unfamiliar does not mean painful. A hearing aid should not create ongoing soreness, broken skin, bleeding, or pressure that you feel you must tolerate. Physical fit affects comfort, sound, feedback, retention, and whether the device can become a practical part of everyday life.

This guide explains safe checks you can make at home and the situations that should be reviewed by the seller, a hearing professional, or a medical clinician.

What a comfortable fit should feel like

A well-placed hearing aid should feel secure during ordinary movements such as talking, chewing, walking, and turning your head. The part in the ear should not create sharp pressure. A behind-the-ear housing should rest without being pinched by glasses, a mask strap, or another device.

For RIC and BTE styles, the wire or tube should follow the ear naturally rather than pulling the earpiece outward. For in-ear styles, the shell or tip should sit as described in the product instructions without being forced deeper.

Sound also contributes to comfort. Your own voice may initially seem different, and everyday sounds may be more noticeable. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders explains that adjustment takes time, but it also advises users to discuss discomfort, feedback, and background-noise concerns with a hearing professional.

A safe placement check at home

Use the instructions supplied with your exact model. Hearing-aid styles, domes, tips, receivers, and insertion depths are not interchangeable.

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Work over a soft, well-lit surface.
  2. Confirm left and right. Check the markings before insertion.
  3. Inspect the device. Look for a loose dome, cracked tip, bent wire, blocked wax guard, moisture, or visible damage.

Do not cut, sand, heat, glue, or reshape a hearing-aid part at home. Do not substitute an ear tip that was not approved for the model. A tip that detaches in the ear canal requires professional removal.

1. The hearing aid feels sore or painful

Mild awareness is different from pain. Remove the device if you feel sharp pressure, persistent soreness, burning, or worsening irritation. Inspect the tip and device for visible damage, and check that you used the correct side and insertion method.

Do not keep wearing the hearing aid to “toughen” the ear. A different dome or tip size, insertion technique, wire length, shell shape, or professional adjustment may be needed. Pain can also come from an ear condition that the device cannot solve.

2. The dome or tip keeps slipping out

Movement during talking and chewing can loosen an unsuitable or incorrectly placed earpiece. Glasses, hair, hats, masks, and phone use can also disturb a behind-the-ear device.

Reinsert the device only as instructed. If it repeatedly works loose, contact support rather than pushing it deeper or changing to a larger part on your own. The appropriate solution depends on the ear, hearing-aid style, receiver or tube, and approved accessory options.

3. Your own voice sounds plugged or too loud

Some users describe their voice as booming, hollow, or trapped inside the head. This is often called the occlusion effect. It can be influenced by how much the ear canal is closed, the acoustic fit, and the hearing-aid settings.

The study was small and does not provide a universal solution, but it reinforces that physical coupling and sound processing need to be considered together.

4. The device whistles or feeds back

Brief feedback may occur when inserting a powered device or when a hand or object comes close to it. Persistent whistling can be associated with an insecure fit, earwax or fluid, damage, or settings that need adjustment.

Do not compensate for persistent weak sound by repeatedly increasing the volume. If the basic checks do not help, the device, fit, settings, or your hearing may need review.

Small daily habits that support comfort

  • Handle hearing aids with clean, dry hands.
  • Inspect domes, tips, wires, tubes, and wax guards regularly.
  • Keep the device away from water, solvents, alcohol, direct heat, and hair products.
  • Insert and remove it over a soft surface.
  • Check how glasses, mask straps, hats, and hair interact with the device.
  • Follow the model’s charging, cleaning, and storage instructions.
  • Keep small hearing aids, batteries, domes, and accessories away from children and pets.

If your ear becomes sweaty or moist, remove and dry the device only as instructed. Do not use a hair dryer, microwave, oven, or unapproved chemical.

When to stop wearing the device and seek help

Stop using the hearing aid and contact the seller or a hearing professional when the device causes persistent pain, skin injury, repeated feedback, frequent slipping, or unexplained sound problems.

Seek medical care promptly for sudden or rapidly worsening hearing, hearing that is much worse in one ear, ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, severe dizziness, a suspected object or detached part in the ear canal, or other concerning symptoms. An OTC hearing aid should not be used to delay evaluation of warning signs.

The FDA advises consumers to consider fit, ease of use, trial or adjustment periods, warranty, maintenance, and support when choosing hearing aids. It also provides a pathway for reporting injuries, malfunctions, and other adverse events.

Use the trial period to evaluate real life

A trial or return period is not only for judging volume. Use it to evaluate comfort and retention during the activities you actually do:

  • one-to-one conversation at home;
  • walking and normal head movement;
  • wearing glasses or a mask;
  • watching television;
  • using the phone;
  • a short visit to a moderately active place.

Keep brief notes about the ear, time worn, activity, physical sensation, sound issue, and any visible skin change. Specific information is more useful to support staff than saying only that the device “doesn’t fit.”

Comfort is part of performance

A hearing aid cannot support everyday listening if it hurts, falls out, or feels too difficult to manage. Comfort depends on the complete match among your ear, the approved physical parts, insertion, acoustic settings, lifestyle, and support.
